How much I enjoy the CSI programmes on TV.The current series of CSI Miami is great and very watchable. How accurate the technology and techniques are is questionable but hey, it’s TV!

If you have never watched any of the CSI shows there are three varieties available. The shows are CSI which is supposed to be in Las Vegas, CSI New York and CSI Miami. I don’t think they are all showing at the moment but CSI Miami is definitely running, on a Tuesday. I did a quick guide check and this is what you get on Channel 5 on a Tuesday evening.

TV

A good evenings CSI viewing here! The first two are fiction and the 11pm show is real life. If you have never watched the shows why not give them a go, you may be surprised.

My wife and I both enjoy the CSI shows and recommend the shows to anyone as a good crime drama show.

We have also watched another show which I think is called real CSI. I cannot remember which night it is shown but if you prefer real life crimes then that show is for you. It is definitely not as glamorous as the fictional shows portray but real life rarely is.

Google Gadgets August 29, 2006

Today I installed Google Gadgets. “You installed what?” I hear you say. Google Gadgets is yet another download of little toys for you fill your desktop with.

After downloading I began the installation and was disappointed to see that desktop indexing was part of the package. I dislike the indexing function as it indexes every last piece of junk on your pc. A searchable list of useful items such as emails, bookmarks, word documents and so on is a great idea. But some of the items indexed are of no consequence to most users and should be excluded.

Once installed you are given a default set of gadgets to start with such as news, weather, and web clips. Also included by default are a To Do list and scratch pad for notes. There is a section where you can choose all manner of extra gadgets to download for free. These range from a wireless signal strength meter to a winamp controller amongst others.

You can choose the position of the gadgets bar, placing it left, right or integrated along the taskbar. I found the autohide option very sensible as it reclaims your desktop viewing area when not in use.

The Gadgets facility will not be for everyone. I love to have a play around with new toys but usually, like most men, I will grow tired of playing, and before long I will be looking for the uninstall button.

If you like gadgets and add-ons this is definitely worth a look.

Pipex Broadband Internet Update August 28, 2006

For anyone who has read the other posts regarding Pipex Internet who cannot manage to close an account properly, here is an update.

For anyone who has not read the other posts, a quick heads up. I migrated to Bethere 24mb broadband internet on 03.07.06. I was assured by Pipex that my account would be closed and any overpayment would be refunded to me at the month end. I waited and this refund did not materialise. I have since then had two monthly payments of £33.99 taken from my bank account for a broadband service I have not received since 03.07.06.

I have contacted Pipex via email after repeatedly failing to be connected via telephone. The time taken to reply to these emails was far too long and absolutely inadequate and unprofessional. I was eventually assured that my problem had been passed on to the provisions department for resolving. Two weeks after being informed of this move I have in the last few days received a new email from the provisions department with an apology for the delay in replying to me. Again, I have been assured that my problem will be resolved and any money owing to me will be refunded.

No details of the amount of the refund were contained within this email and no money has been transferred into my account by Pipex. Why anyone would send another email without actually having resolved the problem first makes no sense to me. I still have no refund and a couple of half hearted apologies doesn’t cut it.

I’m annoyed about this, can you tell?

I will never buy or subscribe to a product or service provided by Pipex again as long as I draw breath and I would advise against you doing so. The service provided when I was a customer was actually very good and they never let me down, until I wanted to leave. Then it became a ridiculous farce.

I will breathe a huge sigh of relief when I get my refund and wish to put Pipex behind me. There is only one problem with this desire. I have just discovered that the company who provide telephone calls to my house have been bought out by , yes, you guessed it Pipex!

I wonder how long it is going to take me to leave them this time!

I left pipex on 3rd July 2006 having migrated to bethere 24mb service. Pipex promised me a refund of any money owing to me. Up to now not only have I not received my refund but they have also taken 2 months payment from my account for a service they no longer provide to me. I am getting really pissed off now. I have contacted customer services several times and they have not done a damn thing to resolve the problem.

I have today sent the details to Watchdog to see if they can help. I will post again when I know more.

I want my money back

This has to be Norton Antivirus at work August 23, 2006

The wrath of god may be unleashed on Security firm Symantec after one of their products incorrectly identified files in a program used by vicars to plan church services. The product identified files as a keylogger and advised users to remove them. The Visual Liturgy software was apparently useless after the files had been deleted.

Church members and the software company, Church House Publishing are furious with Symantec over the mistake. The Symantec product identified a file called vlutils.dll as being part of a keylogging program called SniperSpy. Church House have criticised symantec for taking too long to fix the mistake.

Working in the IT industry and seeing many virus infected computers, I have to say an awful lot of them have Norton Antivirus installed but still manage to get badly infected. Sometimes Norton will find and identify the virus files and offers to remove them for you. After you accept the offer it fails to rid you of the virus.

Myself and other work colleagues always advise people to try an alternative product if possible.
