Big Red Fire Engine July 31, 2006

What is it that makes men unable to grow up? I have been for a day out today to Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The trip was to support animal welfare by visiting the summer fair. Weather was good on arrival and after parking we made our way to the Fair. “We” consisted of my wife Nicole and my mother who is getting more eccentric by the day. The eccentricity seems to run in the family on mums side, they are all a bit batty.

Admission was £2 each.

The first thing I see when going into the fair is a big red fire engine! There is something about the fire engine that makes you go back to childhood. Most men will have had a toy fire engine at some stage of life, and some will still have several (Collectors) and why not. Indulge yourself.

My camera was out of its case and the first picture of the day was produced, quickly followed by another. I would love to drive a Fire engine through the rush hour traffic with lights flashing and sirens blazing. Cool! What a thought. The fire engine looked like this.

Do women like firemen? They all go a bit weak kneed and starry eyed when firemen appear. Including my wife I should imagine. They should have teams of firewomen to make it fair.

There were lots of thing at the fair but I will have to post tomorrow as it is now approaching 1am and I need to sleep.

Availabot – Make yourself some friends July 29, 2006

I came across this little gem this morning. The availabot is a small puppet llike gadget that connects to your pc via usb. It seems that you then assign it to one of your friends in your buddy list. They only support ichat on Mac at the moment but are looking to extend the application compatibility.
If the person is signed in the puppet stands up proud and tall. If they are not signed in it sits in a crumpled heap. The idea is a prototype being developed by Schulze and Webb ltd.

Schulze and Webb are a design shop in London and the availabot was shown at the RCA Show 2006.

Watching The World From A Dirty Window July 27, 2006

How many people have no view when they are at work? It is a strange statistic to request but I am curious. At present I have a reasonable view from the windows at work. The premises are ex-retail and so have a large glass frontage which provides some escape from the monotony of work. People stroll by chatting, some louder than needed. Cars and trucks pass by on the busy road in front of me. It gets a bit too warm in this weather but at the end of the day, it is not bad at all.

Next week my view will be gone. No more people and cars to view going about their business, but a solid wall made from beautiful grey breeze blocks. This sight awaits me next week as we prepare to move to new business premises. The move is necessary but a view is also pretty good to have. How much enjoyment can you derive from a wall of breeze blocks. Not much at all.

Knowing if it is going to drive me insane would be a definite advantage but I will just have to wait and see. I mean you can’t just stop going to work because there is no view, can you? If only.

I can escape outside for a drink two or three times a day so it should be fine. Summertime will be ok as lunch can be eaten out in the sun but winter, I don’t know. Hands up any of you who work in environments with no outside view. Does it drive you mad or is it soon forgotten.

Coal miners didn’t have much of a view did they? Are there actually any coal miners still working underground or did they all lose their jobs when Maggie was in office.  You never hear anything about coal mining today in the news but it must still exist.

Anyway I am going now to look at my view once more before it is too late.

Be careful if leaving Pipex broadband July 27, 2006

I am angry! Very angry! I used to be a broadband customer with Pipex. The service was very good and there was never any downtime to speak of. Emails always worked fine and I had no real problems with them. Until I left them that is. I left them half way through a billing period so had to pay for a full month. I was promised that the difference would be refunded after I had departed and calculations had been made. As yet, I have received no refund of any kind and was still waiting until tonight when I checked my bank account.

Pipex in their wisdom have actually taken another months broadband payment from my account! They have helped themselves to £33.99 from my bank account and I am pissed about it. I have sent the angry email to customer services and await a reply hopefully containing an apology and refund confirmation. Now I am usually ok with things going a little wrong but this is a large company and they should not make mistakes like this. I am pleased that I have kept the confirmation email containing my migration code which I sent to them as proof. I will post the outcome of this situation, that someone actually did warn me could happen with Pipex, when I have it.

In the meantime, if you are migrating to another internet provider make sure you check your bank accounts and watch for unauthorised withdrawals. It just shows it isn’t necessarily always a Romanian card skimmimg gang that takes money from your account.

Damn! I’m angry!

I’m talking about the world of bodybuilding. To some, the sight of a massive muscled ripped individual is repulsive. To others it is a thing to behold. I am in the latter category. Just to make it clear that I am not talking about sexual muscle worship here but an admiration and respect for the time, dedication and effort involved in attaining a physique that most people will never ever get anywhere near, myself included.

For any of you that have ever seen the film Pumping Iron you will know what I mean. The perfect symmetry of someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Frank Zane at their peak was and still is hard to better.

The bodybuilders of today are just too big to be appreciated by the general public. Someone like Zane or Arnold could be admired as having a physique people could aspire to but the likes of Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler, while being huge and ripped, are just too freaky to be envied by the average man in the street. I train myself and would love to achieve a physique along the lines of Zane but too big is too much and that’s it.

I was fortunate in realising a few years ago that the mens muscle mags published by big companies such as weider amongst others are far away from telling the truth about results attainable by the readers of the publications. The mags contain workouts claiming to give you bigger arms, a bigger chest, bigger legs, lower body fat and all in six weeks or maybe ten. When you browse the workout plans they would wipeout an average gym member and probably some experienced athletes as well. This is not very fair to the little guy who wants to be bigger or ripped. He will try to perform the exercises and most likely end up with at least one injury and a very sore body.

The obvious money spinner in magazines is advertising for supplement companies. While a straight forward protein powder based drink is definitely an advantage to someone trying to add lean muscle mass, are they really in need of a product loaded with creatine, protein blends, sugar, vitamins, minerals, more sugar and probably a good helping of dextrose “filler”. I see young guys at the gym performing some very strange exercises which can only have come from something like mens health, loaded or another publication. I can see them now, doing bicep curls at 90 mph, well half bicep curls actually because everybody knows you don’t have straighten your arm when doing curls?

It would be good to see a magazine that just tells it like it is. If you are going to weight train, do some research about nutrition and exercise. Learn a little about your body and how muscles respond to weight lifting. Workout a plan with a qualified instructor at your gym and get in there and train. Take it easy at first and your strength and mass will increase. Eat well, eat good food and by all means take a simple whey protein based drink if you want. Get lots of sleep and repeat. Start with 3 workouts a week to start. You can always increase to four if you want later.

Try and warm up before you lift as it hurts when you get injured believe me. 5 minutes on a bike and a few stretches is all it needs. So if you are reading the magazines, throw them away and start again properly. If you train at a good gym there should be a reasonably knowledgeable instructor there to help you workout a training plan.

Go train.
